Kahone Solar PV Plant

Description

Project Name: Kahone Solar PV Plant

Project Owner: Energy Resources Senegal

Standard: Verra VCS

Project ID: 1683

Since President Macky Sall launched Senegal’s visionary energy policy in July 2012, the nation has embraced a bold commitment to diversify its energy mix and harness renewable power. The Kahone Solar PV Plant (operational since 2018) stands as a cornerstone of this transformation. Located in the vibrant Kaolack region, this state-of-the-art facility is powering 150,000 households with clean, green electricity, driving Senegal toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Spanning 40 hectares of sun-soaked land, the plant’s cutting-edge solar panels generate reliable, renewable energy under a 25-year agreement with Senelec, ensuring long-term stability for the national grid. As the fourth grid-connected solar project in Senegal, Kahone is a testament to the country’s dynamic shift away from fossil fuel dependence.

Developed by Energy Resources Sénégal (ERS), a Senegalese company founded in 2013, Kahone showcases local expertise and innovation in renewable energy. ERS is on a mission to revolutionize Senegal’s energy landscape, with ambitious plans to achieve 500 MW of green energy capacity by 2025.

Impact

Senelec (national electricity company) buys the kWh of thermal power plants 40% more than the kWh of photovoltaic plants.

The project helps to reduce the electricity bill of Senegalese households.

ERS used the local workforce to build the plan

The project hired more than 100 local people for the construction phase and relies on 15 permanent technicians to ensure operation and maintenance.

Around 70% of Senegal’s energy production comes from fossil fuels.

The project helps to reduce the gap between fossil fuels and renewable energy.

The plant was build through advanced technology transfer from industrialized countries.

This project will strengthen the attractiveness of Senegal in the photovoltaic sector and contribute to the installation of a new source of employment.
