Description
Project Name: Grouped Electric Bikes project in Africa
Project Owner: Spiro
Standard: Verra VCS
Project ID: 3985
In sub-Saharan Africa, where the transport sector accounts for 14.5% of energy combustion and a staggering 28% of the continent’s CO2 emissions, Spiro is driving a bold solution to transform urban mobility. By rolling out 9 million electric motorcycles across multiple African countries, Spiro is redefining transportation. With plans to establish assembly factories and solar-powered swapping/charging stations in each country, Spiro is building a sustainable ecosystem that tackles climate change head-on.
In sub-Saharan Africa, fossil fuel-powered motorbikes serve as the backbone of public transportation, fueling taxi services, deliveries, and personal travel. Spiro’s electric motorcycles offer a cleaner, greener alternative, significantly reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. Equipped with cutting-edge IoT systems, every bike tracks kilometers traveled, speed, and location, enabling precise monitoring of emission reductions.
80% of the electricity used to charge these electric motorcycles comes from solar PV recharge stations, harnessing Africa’s abundant sunshine to power a low-carbon transport network. This innovative infrastructure ensures that riders (whether taxi drivers, delivery workers, or individuals) can travel efficiently, affordably, and sustainably, all while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Founded in 2019 as M Auto Electric, and rebranded as Spiro in 2022, the company launched its operation in Africa with operations in Benin, Togo, Rwanda, and Uganda, delivering sustainable mobility solutions.
By creating local jobs through assembly factories and charging infrastructure, Spiro boosts economies and fosters skills development.
Impact
Bikes are considered as one of the most efficient public transportation system in West African countries.
The project introduces electric bikes that will reduce the carbon emission created by the existing vehicles.
Spiro has a strong policy on women’s employment.
The bikes are operated by women technicians who are a part of MAUTO’s huge diverse and inclusive workforce.
Spiro is using local workforce for its factory, drivers and maintenance mechanics.
The project will create more than 2,000 jobs locally.
The transport sector is the second largest source of emissions in Africa.
Thanks to the project, 2,000,000 tCO2 will be saved each year.
