Outapi Solar PV Farm

Description

Project Name: Outapi

Project Owner: Innovent

Standard: Verra VCS

Project ID: 1766

Nestled near Outapi (Omusati region), this 8.5 MW Solar Power Plant is a greenfield marvel transforming the local energy landscape. Supplying clean renewable electricity to a region that consumes 12 MW for households and businesses, this state-of-the-art facility is powering homes, fueling enterprises, and driving Namibia toward greater energy self-sufficiency. By harnessing the sun’s abundant energy, Outapi is lighting the way for a sustainable future.

The Outapi Solar Power Plant is a game-changer for the Omusati region, slashing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By generating clean electricity locally, it alleviates pressure on Namibia’s national grid and cuts the need for costly energy imports. This bold step enhances the country’s energy security, aligning with Namibia’s vision for a greener, more resilient economy.

Beyond clean power, Outapi delivers lasting benefits to the region. The project has sparked local job creation, from construction to ongoing operations, fostering skills and economic growth in Omusati.

Initiated by Camelthorn Business Ventures, a Namibian company founded in 2011, the Outapi project reflects a commitment to blending social, environmental, and commercial goals. Camelthorn’s mission to drive impact investing in infrastructure has transformed marginal land into a hub of renewable energy, working hand-in-hand with local communities to promote long-term prosperity. In 2020, Innovent, a French renewable energy leader with over a decade of expertise in African wind and solar projects, acquired the plant. Innovent is now set to double the plant’s capacity by adding new solar panels, amplifying its impact and reinforcing Outapi’s role as a renewable energy pioneer.

With a strong presence in Namibia since 2011, Innovent brings unparalleled experience in developing and operating renewable energy projects across Africa. Their ambitious plan to expand the Outapi plant underscores their dedication to sustainable innovation. By scaling up clean energy production, Innovent is positioning Namibia as a leader in the region’s green energy revolution.

Impact

Namibia faces significant energy shortage, and has only been able to meet its energy needs through costly energy imports.

The project contributes to increase generation capacity in Namibia and reduces import’s costs.

The plant reduces carbon emissions by producing green, emission-free electricity.

9,300 tCO2 are avoided each year, supplying 3,000 households with green electricity.

Local workforce was used to build the plant.

The project made the promotion of employment and skills development during construction and operation.

Namibia’s energy mix is mainly composed of energy fossil fuel.

The plant is providing positive demonstration effects for solar development in Namibia and neighboring countries.

CSR Action

Salle de classe

Innovent is giving back 10% of the revenues to the Outapi Community for building classroom.

Heath care

These revenues are also used to provide medicine supply and elderly care.

Ecole

Innovent, is helping to build a school of nursing in the Outapi region allowing the student to stay in their home region to be trained.
