First refurbished wind turbines project in Morocco
The Oualidia 36 MW wind farm is the result of a circular economy vision. The site re-uses 10 former Finnish turbines fully renovated for redeployment in Morocco. This innovation was developed by Innovent Morocco (affiliate of French Group Innovent).
Although engaged in an ambitious renewable energy strategy including 4,000 MW of solar & wind capacity targeted by 2020, Moroccan electricity mix thermal contribution still exceeds 70%, predominantly relying on imported charcoal.
The 10 re-conditionned, re-manufactured WinWinD wind turbines will allow the reuse of more than 4,000 tonnes of noble materials (steel, copper, electronics, etc.) and generate about 70 GWh/y, avoiding 45 000 tCO2annually. Among other innovative aspects of the project, its development was partially financed through a crowdfunding campaign, attracting 720 investors who subscribed for a special bond issue worth a total of EUR 1 million.
