Support Access To Electricity In Madagascar, One Of The Least Developed Country
Sahanivotry small run of river hydro plant is the first independent hydro plant developed by a private sector company in the last 50 years in Madagascar, by Hydelec, pioneering clean energy in the island.
The project activity is a run-of-river hydropower plant of 16.5 MW located on the river Ampamehana, in the village of Sahanivotry (Antananarivo Province). The plant is connected to the regional grid of Antananarivo and generates up to 90 GWh green electricity per year, decreasing Madagascar dependence on expensively imported energy source above all fuel oil and reducing CO2 emissions caused by the same. It further improves the environmental equilibrium through the afforestation of 40,000 trees on the project site and extends employment opportunities to local people.
