A Pioneer Solar Farm Project in Namibia

The project consists in the construction and operation of a greenfield 8.5 MW solar power plant near Outapi, the regional capital of Omusati region, Namibia.

Outapi solar farm is part of Namibia’s Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariff (REFIT) programme and its power generation is off-taken and distributed by Namibia Power Corporation (national power utility company), therefore substituting grid electricity by clean and renewable energy, and cut down GHG emissions from baseline fossil fuel intensive grid mix. Apart from emission reductions, the benefits of the project comprise, among others, improvement of energy self-sufficiency of the country, as well as the creation of local employment. The project’s sponsored improvement of the livelihoods of Outapi’s people is implemented through Outapi Community Trust, dealing with all social ills in the region, burials, classrooms for rural children, medicine supply, elderly care etc.
