Support Wastewater And Biogas Technologies In Rural Uganda

Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL), the largest sugar producer in the country, invested in a pioneer wastewater treatment plant, generating biogas and natural fertilizers as by-products.

Sugar Corporation of Uganda’s Anaerobic digestion and heat generation project is an Effluent Treatment Plant processing vinasse waste generated by its new distillery. Anaerobic digestion avoids methane emissions due to the vinasse decomposition. The biogas collected is combusted into a boiler to produce heat and sludge surplus from the digestion process are used as manure for sugarcane fields. More than 1,800 cane growers are provided with subsidized loans and technical assistance on land preparation, cane growing and supply of seedlings.
